The National Service Scheme was established by Government of India on 1969. The main objective of establishing NSS was personality development of a student through community service, to understand the students about community work and work with or among people, to develop a sense of social responsibilities. To acquire leadership qualities, democratic attitude etc.
The NSS at Rangia College was opened with a motto “Not Me but You” along with few colleges under Gauhati University in 1969. It is worth mention able that in the year of introduction Mr. Hirendra Nath Sarma, Professor Political Science Department held on the post of first programme officer of the unit. The unit has passed four long decade implementing different activities including routine work.
